Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rubbermaid 7083 72-Inch Four-Shelf Double-Door Resin Storage Cabinet

Customer Review: Great Storage
Summary: 5 Stars

Product was easy to assemble. Holds a very large amount of clutter behind closed doors.

Customer Review: Decent cabinet
Summary: 4 Stars

Very easy to assemble, all plastic (no rusting) and looks good. The price ($119.99) and Free delivery from Amazon.com was the main criteria for me in purchasing the unit from Amazon. A lot of places wanted around $135.00 for the same unit, but the big difference was the shipping costs. One on-line vendor quoted $165. to ship the unit to my home! Most other places wanted around $65. to ship this unit to me. I love that FREE delivery from Amazon!

In terms of quality, I found that Rubbermaid should focus on how they cut the holes for the hinge posts. The plastic was thin at those points, and cracks around the holes had already appeared during the manufacturing process. Also, the plastic cutout "plugs" from the hinge point holes were still rattling around inside the doors, and I had to clean these out and trim the excess plastic with a knife before I assembled the unit. The result is doors that are somewhat stiff in opening and closing.

You have to level the unit on the floor very carefully using a level and wood shims in order to get the doors to line up reasonably well. Otherwise, the doors are all askew.
A rubber mallett "pursuader" helps with the assembly.

The 3 middle shelves are perforated and if something spills on the top shelf, it will drip all the way down to the bottom of the unit. Hey Rubbermaid, why not make the 3 middle shelves the same as the top and bottom and make them solid (no perforations)?

I am using this unit in my garage, so the unit won't rust like more expensive metal units, and my wife was very happy that I was able to get all my lawn and garden supplies off the garage floor and out of sight. She thought it was worth every penny!

Thanks to all those who wrote reviews with constructive points about the issues one can run in to when purchasing/building/using this item. I bought it, knowing that some people felt its fit and finish were not up to par, and that cutouts (from making the necessary assembly holes at the factory) were often stuck in the walls and/or not quite completely cut out. As I surmised, the first problem I mentioned was that the people assembling the item who were less astute about how these types of things work were not taking the necessary steps to insure proper fit, and the second problem was easily resolved by insuring that I removed all cutouts and shavings before beginning the assembly.

The only advice I can offer to amateur do-it-yourselfers is this:
When you install the walls/shelves/doors by pushing them over the four corner posts, you will notice that sometimes the plastic around the hole for the post buckles outwards, which will interfere with the fit of the next layer that goes on top of it (i.e. since it is buckling out, the next piece of wall/door/shelf will not fit flush on top of it). Ergo, you must tuck the buckling pieces back inwards so that they are out of the way when the next layer is installed. This (and insuring that all loose shavings/cutouts are removed before beginning installation -- they also can wedge in the way of a wall/door/shelf, causing an uneven fit) will help you achieve an almost perfect fit.

Customer Review: Good for the Price

After doing a considerable amount of shopping for outdoor storage (at big box stores and on-line) I finally decided on this. Once I understood that this was not watertight, I decided to take a chance since it would be protected by my carport roof and not directly exposed to the rain. After a few weeks and several downpours, I am pleased with the purchase but note that I found it for significantly less than what it is offered for here.

I can see where it would not be appropriate for heavy paint cans or other heavy items as the shelves are only plastic, but again, for the price, I don't think it can be beat. My stuff is hidden from view, protected from the elements, and I was not about to spend $200+ for storage.

Also, I might point out that the instructions are printed on the outside of the box (which posed some temporary head scratching since the shipper wrapped non removable strapping tape on it), but it was not that complicated to assemble. All it took was a rubber mallet and about 30 minutes.

Customer Review: Good product that came in a beat-up box
Summary: 4 Stars

Like another reviewer, my Rubbermaid #7083 cabinet arrived in a somewhat disheveled box (torn open in one spot), but the contents were OK. Assembly was easy--like several other reviewers, I too found that using a heavy rubber mallet was more essential than optional to fit the pieces together. Be prepared to clean out lots of disk-shaped pieces of plastic from the hollow of the panels (normal by-products of the manufacturing process), unless you're content to let those waste pieces rattle inside the panels. Of course, once you have the cabinet assembled and filled with whatever you fill it with, it's not going to be moving--so you won't hear any rattles (except possibly in the door panels). If you can live with junk pieces inside the panels, that will save you several minutes during the assembly process.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase; I'm using the cabinet in my garage.
