Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rubbermaid 3H89 Configurations 4-to-8-Foot Deluxe Custom Closet Kit, WhiteCustomer Review: Gets it organized Summary: 5 Stars
Used two of these to organize our closet. Easy to install. Able to change things around until we got everything where it would work best.
Customer Review: Rubbermaid vs. Elfa vs. Storables throwdown Summary: 4 Stars
I have purchased parts from all 3 systems and have done a lot of research into all of them.
In my view, here are the relative best features of each system:
RUBBERMAID
-Ingenious design of shelving and rods allows easy customization of lengths without any permanent cutting. Elfa/Storables require cutting of rods and shelves. The closet kit is a nice starter set to try out various configurations at a reasonable cost.
ELFA (Container Store)
-Uniquely offering wood fascia to enhance the front of the wire shelves.
-Nice slide-out wire baskets available in different sizes and fine wire mesh.
STORABLES
-Fantastic 2-drawer wood units that have glide rails allowing full extension when opening. Compare to the Rubbermaid version which have smaller capacity, use cheap, noisy metal wheels, and only open 6 inches. Elfa does not offer wood drawers.
-Nice 3-shelf wood units which are larger and better made than the Rubbermaid version. Elfa does not offer the 3-shelf unit.
-The clothes rod has attractive metal end caps that stop your hangers from falling off the end. The rod mounts don't block your hangers allowing you to slide your clothes the full length of the rod. Compare to Elfa which blocks the hangers at each rod mount. Compare to Rubbermaid which allows full length sliding but has cheap plastic end caps. None of the 3 brands' rod mounts are compatible with other brands' shelf brackets.
-Wood shelving is made to custom lengths as opposed to Elfa which only comes in fixed lengths.
Elfa/Storables
-Both have superior vertical tracks to Rubbermaid because they don't require any drilling into the wall and are available full-length. Rubbermaid uses extension tracks which require drilling into the wall which means you can't easily adjust spacing of tracks.
-(All the brands' tracks have the same mounting holes so you can mount any other brand's accessories on them.)
If you want the absolute best closet and are set on the layout, I would recommend the Storables or Elfa track, Storables wood drawers and shelf unit, Storables wood shelving and rods, Elfa ventilated shelves (with wood fascia), and Elfa wire baskets.
If you are uncertain about the layout or want to be able to change it easily in the future, the Rubbermaid kit is a good option. You can improve the flexibility by replacing the Rubbermaid tracks with ones from Storables or Elfa.
Customer Review: best organizer I've ever used Summary: 4 Stars
My husband and I are tall and found that our old organizer did not allow enough space between the shirt and pant hanging rods. With this system, we were able to hang the track higher on the wall and select the position of the hanging rods. It is securely attached to the walls and we love the flexibility--so much that we purchased another track at a local home improvement store and used the leftovers to redo another closet that was too small for other organizers! Will likely replace ALL our closet organizers with this newer system.
