Customer Review: Easy assembly, great value

After looking at many different closet systems from many different manufacturers with a wide range of price tags, we finally settled on the Rubbermaid system based on the claimed ease of assembly, the appearance, the value, and of course the reviews on Amazon. It was a great call. Once we got wall anchors, it took us a single evening (actually, a couple of hours after dinner) to put up the shelves. The system is not only sturdy, but it's well finished, too. I don't have to worry about my silk scarves snagging on rough metal edges. I also particularly like the clever design of the clothes rods, which provide solid support while allowing most hangers to slide smoothly from one end to another.
As our closet is just over 6 ft long, we didn't end up using all the pieces, but the extra flexibility afforded by the system still made this a better deal for us than the 3-6' deluxe set or the classic set. As we have a great deal of clothes to hang and blankets to store, we didn't have any room (or need) for the accessories. Instead, we use plastic boxes to keep the items on the shelves organized.
My only complaint is the plastic pieces on the support brackets, which are meant to lock the shelves in place, can break. (Two of ours came broken, but fortunately we didn't need them.) Due to this fragility, I considered giving this a 4 star rating instead, but ultimately 5 stars seemed to reflect the product quality more closely. I'm also a bit disappointed that we don't have any room at the bottom to store shoes and things, but it's not exactly Rubbermaid's fault that tall people have jackets that brush the ground.

I have hated my closet for about 4 years now but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a custom closet. It's the long reach in kind with minimal space. I purchased the Rubbermaid Deluxe Closet Kit just a couple of weeks ago and now I love my closet and have more space than I thought was possible. This is a great product for the price and pretty easy to install if you have all the right tools. It really maximizes all your space and looks great in the titanium. I have a few tips for those of you who have yet to buy and install it.
- Paint the inside of your closet first. I painted a dark brown color and it makes the closet look bigger and much nicer.
- Be careful how far apart you place the vertical wall attachments. It says over 22" for the shelves but then my small hanger bar was too short and I had to drill new holes. Just measure the distance to be slightly less than the shortest bar.
- Buy metal wall supports and toss the weak plastic ones that come with it. If you install into drywall without studs you will need them.
- Use a leveler!
- Unless you are super handy, it's easiest to install this with two people if you want everything leveled properly.
- For the ladies, I was able to place all of my boots across the top rack and now they are all in easy view and off the floor.
- The install was probably the easiest part of this project. The most time consuming was cleaning out my closet, removing the old supports and painting. Be prepared to spend some time but it is all VERY worth it in the end!

Bought this system to convert a small bedroom into a closet. What a difference!!!!! I have gone from a small closet in an old house with clothes in totes, on the backs of doors, spilling out of drawers to a much more organized and functional space!!! I'm getting the 3-6' system for the other wall!!! The best thing is that the shelves and rods can be redesigned to fit YOUR clothes!! Thanks! Definitely order the extension rods and the shoe shelves/racks... Pictures will follow later.
Purchased the 3-6' system and installed on opposite wall!!! LOVE IT... Agreed that 2 people, drill (corded), level, stepladder, and heavier anchors are necessities. But it is a great organizer for the price...I was able to get free shipping (Prime customer). Now if I had only ordered more extension rods... No matter... Started out one way, got the other installed, rearranged things, and once I get the other extension rods, will rearrange things one more time. That's the best part - you can adjust and readjust to fit your needs as you change your mind. I have room for my hats, baskets, and purses all on the very top shelves (you will need to install the vertical racks a little lower to ensure adequate height for storing items on the top shelves). Makes me wonder what I did before this came along... oh right... lived out of totes and had to re-iron things because they got wrinkled again. And now my bedroom is truly a place to sleep and relax!! Can hardly wait to see where else I can put this closet system to use...

Used it to replace a sagging single rod and shelf. Installation was easy. The thing that took the longest was just deciding which configuration would work best for my closet because of the sloping roofline common in Cape-style homes. Fortunately, it was easy to experiment with the configuration after installation and was able to come up with a configuration that worked well. Now my closet is very clean and organized, and there is plenty of space when before it was cramped and hard to find things. Works so well and was so easy, have already done a second closet with plans for at least one more. Now my problem is finding stuff to store!
Three minor quibbles:
1. The plastic endcaps for the rods don't seat very well and pop off easily if you don't really, really jam them on. Haven't had any problems with them coming off afterward, but will remedy with a small set screw if any problems do develop.
2. The plastic retainers in the closet rod brackets do develop a little bit of a memory. If you had a larger rod diameter in the bracket for a day or so and then try to switch to the smaller rod, the retainer is a little too stretched out to hold well. If you do need to move the rods, move the brackets they were in along with them.
3. Would like more individual parts to be available (single closet rods for example). Try the closet section in your home center or hardware store - they may have some or the parts.
Those minor issues aside, this is a very affordable and easy-to-use closet organization solution.

My wife and I were looking for an open closet and got some quotes from MDF and wood closet makers. The ones that we cared for were above $800!
This system looks OK and is easy to install. We went for the Deluxe Kit, and we got some accessories too: two wire baskets and a trouser hanger. Everything was below $500.
It took me 12 hours (not one as other lucky reviewer), but that includes removing all the clothes from the other closet, removing the other closet, going to the hardware shop to buy a 3/8" drilling bit and anchors for masonry wall (ours is not drywall), drilling the masonry wall, installing the closet, trying different configurations, going to a Christmas Party in between, installing the accessories AND putting the clothes in the new closet.
Overall, one of the greatest gifts we bought for ourselves this christmas. I'm very happy with it. Yesterday I started rearranging it again to better optimize space.
Some words of advice:
1. The Deluxe kit we got comes with a LOT of shelves. But because we also got the accessories, we couldn't use all the shelves. I wonder if the Classic Kit + Accessories would have suited us better.
2. We got two shoe racks as accesories to this closet system, but returned them the next day (exchanged them for a wire basket). These take up too much space of the closet because you have to put them in the rails. It's simpler to purchase a longer shoe rack separately that you can put on the floor.
