Customer Review: excellent, but assemble with care

After reading both positive and negative reviews here, we decided to take a chance - I suspected that the negative experiences may have been a consequence of how the product was assembled by the purchaser. After receiving and assembling ours, I am even more convinced that assembly is an issue here, though probably not the fault of the assembler.
The instructions indicate that the use of a mallet is optional. It should *not* be optional! As noted by another reviewer, the fit of metal tubes into plastic connectors is very tight. I am a fairly fit fellow, and I had difficulty inserting the tubes fully. Even when I thought I had, comparison of the two uprights showed that they were not equally inserted. The other reviewer resorted to a hair dryer to temporarily expand the openings - I went for the mallet (actually, I used a regular hammer with a block of soft pine wood to protect the metal tube I was striking).
Our rack has proven very sturdy and reliable. In fact, we use it to hang wet clothes from the washer on plastic hangers as an indoor drying rack. It is the kind of well designed, sturdy product one would expect from Rubbermaid, and thus 5 stars, although for instructions and precautions about the need for a mallet, one star would be appropriate.
